WELCOME TO CLASS 5

Welcome to Year 5 and 6, where we work together to not only achieve end of year curricular aims, but also to develop the skills to be lifelong learners and ready to move through the transition to secondary school. Our aim for all of the children in Class 5 is to develop the 5R's of learning: Resilience, Responsibility, Resourcefulness, Reasoning and Reflection.

We encourage the children to formulate questions about the topics we cover and develop a sense of curiosity about their learning.

Key Timings:

PE: Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons.  Come to school in PE kits on these days.

PE kit:

·        Black shorts, leggings or tracksuit bottoms

·        Green T-shirt with logo

·        Trainers or plimsolls

·        Wet weather jacket and warmer tracksuits (school colours) may be worn for PE during colder weather

·        No earrings or jewellery

Please can all items of kit and school uniform be named.

Homework:
Reading: this should be enjoyed on a daily basis. Reading independently, reading together and across a variety of genres are all beneficial as are audio books. Reading records are to be handed in on a Monday morning, checked and then returned by Tuesday.  Please keep your reading materials in a book bag so that nothing is lost or misplaced.
Times tables: facts – by year 5 and 6 all tables should be fluent.  Please practise these regularly as part of the weekly homework. Practise the tables that are found most difficult.
For Year 6: additional homework will be sent home to reinforce and practise basic concepts in English and maths.
Spellings: Issued on Mondays and practised daily, every morning, in school. There will not be a formal weekly spelling test, but spellings will be assessed periodically to monitor their progress.  Practising both the spellings and the handwriting as part of your homework will be beneficial, but is not obligatory.

Summer Term 2025

English: Our first half term will be spent refining our grammatical skills used in writing.  We will be completing the unit about recounts and diaries that was started before the Easter break and using the skills to write about our own personal events and experiences.  We will then move on to a narrative focus and in particular the use of speech in characterisation.  These skills will then be showcased as we move onto to explore Greek myths which will link to our learning about the ancient Greeks in our  history work. Reading comprehension, spelling and handwriting will be practised daily – please ensure that your child is in school promptly, so that they don’t miss out on these vital skills.

In the second half of the term, we will explore poetry, balanced arguments and playscripts, we will use the features of narratives within these units to practise the skills of writing stories, using the other genres to inspire our ideas.

Class Texts: As well as completing our text from the spring term, The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgeson Burnett, we will be exploring a text by Matt Goodfellow, called The Final Year.  This powerful lyrical story is about finding your place in the world and the people that matter within it.

If time allows, we will also read the text Who Let the Gods Out? by Maz Evans. In this text, a troubled boy’s life is turned upside down when an immortal crashes out of the sky onto his barn. They go on adventures together but accidentally release a daemon. With help from the gods, they begin a quest to save the world that takes them to incredible places on Earth and beyond

Maths:

We will follow the White Rose year group units for Year 5 and 6 in this subject.  In the summer term, we will focus on the units: shape, position and direction, decimals, negative numbers, converting units and volume. Year 6, will have completed all our units by mid May, so will spend the time consolidating areas that they find more difficult, challenging themselves with investigative work and ensuring that their calculation skills are secure before their move to secondary school. We will continue to practice all other areas of mathematics in our daily fluency sessions. Homework will continue to be sent home on a Friday.  Well done to all the children who are making a regular effort to complete and hand in their work.

Geography: We will be learning about the geography of ancient Greece including islands, significant city states, landmarks, surrounding seas and countries.  We will be able to answer the question ‘Where is Greece?’ using atlases, a world map or existing geographical knowledge of the world.

  1. In this unit, children will learn about the biomes and ecosystems in the UK. They will complete a case study of the New Forest, discovering the diversity of trees, plants and animals found there. They will plan fieldwork to be conducted in our local woodland ecosystem, investigating the amount and variety of trees, plants and animals. They will then conduct this fieldwork in our local woodland ecosystem, observing, measuring and recording their findings. Children will finally analyse the data collected and present their information to an audience.

History:

Ground Breaking Greeks. This project teaches children about developments and changes over six periods of ancient Greek history, focusing on the city state of Athens in the Classical age, and exploring the lasting legacy of ancient Greece.

This term’s focus will include a workshop at the Eden Project: (Greece and the Edenauts) – Here we will journey through the Mediterranean Biome completing a series of challenges based around Greek mythology, plants and daily life in Ancient Greece. Each challenge tests a different skill - sensory, musical, physical, scientific thinking, observational and proprioception.

Science:

All living things and their habitats.   During this unit of work, children will learn about classification of living things, including microorganisms. They will learn the names and characteristics of the main groups used to classify animals, plants and microorganisms. Children will learn to use a classification key and create their own key using yes/no questions. Children will investigate the question; Is yeast a microorganism? And conduct an experiment involving the respiration of yeast. They will produce a presentation about the life and work of Carolus Linnaeus and understand the importance of his standard classification system.

Animals including Human Reproduction and Ageing. During this unit of work, children will learn about the different stages of the human life cycle. They will discuss a simple timeline first before going into more depth about what happens in the womb, during puberty and when you are older

Art:

2D drawing/ 3D making

This project allows children to explore the idea that drawing as a 2 dimensional activity can be used to transform surfaces which can then be manipulated into a 3 dimensional object.  It also enables the children to know about great artists, architects and designers in history.

DT:

Architecture This project teaches children about how architectural style and technology has developed over time and then use this knowledge to design a building with specific features.

PSHE:

We will follow the SCARF units for PSHE which will include the units ‘Being My Best’ and ‘Growing and Changing’.  The themes and content covered in this unit will also be revisited through our assemblies during the term.

RE:

We are following a two-year programme of study from Curriculum Kernewek.  Our first topic for this half term is a unit covering the Christianity unit of PEOPLE OF GOD: How can following God bring freedom and Justice? This will be followed by a unit looking at Christianity in the locality of Cornwall and considering the question: How does faith help people in Cornwall when life gets hard?

MFL:

In Year 5 we will continue to build on our French vocabulary, listening and writing skills through the units of 'Time Travelling’ and ‘School Life’.  In the first unit, we will apply previous skills and knowledge of topic areas such as numbers and dates, extending this to talk about key events in French history. In our second unit we will learn key vocabulary and phrases connected to the theme of school: objects, subjects and prepositional language and the names of 2D shapes. Children will learn questions and answers which they would use at school. Year 6 will be looking at the units ‘Our Precious Planet’ and ‘More to Explore’.  These units will develop vocabulary skills and practise a range of key French sounds including accents, liaisons, silent letters and nasal vowels. The children will learn more about France and French speaking countries, read a story in French and perform a rap to practise key rhyming sounds. They will take part in conversations, interviews, games, activities and surveys, as well as fun reading and writing challenges, all with the goal of improving their literacy and oracy skills in French.

Music:

We will be embedding skills, knowledge and understanding through singing, playing, improvising, composing, and listening. Initially we will be exploring Baloo baleerie.  Pupils will explore lullabies from across the globe, learn about 3/4 time, as well as sing and play this beautiful lullaby from the Shetland Islands.  In the second half of the summer term we will cover the unit ‘Kis nay banaayaa’.  This unit is based on a song from India and Pakistan, and has a musical focus on  melody, accompaniment, four-part singing in a round and creating an arrangement.

Computing:

ICT will be used throughout all the other subject areas to enhance the children's understanding and for research purposes.  Children will be encouraged to use ICT as a tool for furthering their understanding in other curriculum areas. Throughout the term there will be an emphasis on keeping ourselves safe online.  Both Year 5 and Year 6 will follow two units this term.  For Year 5,  this will explore Selection with Microbits , as well as Selection in Quizzes.  For Year 6, the focus will be Variables in Games, followed by a unit called, MIcrobits – Get Active.

PE:

The first half term will have a sport focus of Nimble nets, a fitness focus of Pilates, and a health focus on healthy bodies.  The second half term will have a sport focus of Young Olympians, a fitness focus of cool core, and a health focus on ‘germ busters.’ There will be opportunities for children to participate in extracurricular clubs and sporting events and festivals as part of our links with both the Newquay Schools sports partnership and the Aspire Sports Network.
